Sloth Bears - Reproduction

Sloth Bears mate in late spring or early summer, although in some areas they can mate at all times of the year. Like all bears they may have delayed implantation. The blind and helpless cubs are born 6 to 7 months later. Sloth Bears have 1-2 cubs that are born in the earth dens. Cubs stay in the den for 1-2 months and then are able to forage with the mother; they stay with the mother until they are 1 or even 2 years old.

The Sloth Bear is the only bear species that carry the cubs on the back. One cub takes a riding position on the mother's shoulders while the other rides near the rump. Adult males of Sloth Bears are not so aggressive to the cubs and display no predatory instincts towards them.

Sloth Bears - Habits

The information about the Sloth Bear in the wild is very scarce, but some observations suggest that this species live solitary lives, except for females with cubs and couples in mating season. These animals have small home ranges that vary with the concentration of food sources. The more concentrated the food, the smaller the area is necessary to maintain an animal. They communicate with several types of vocalization, but the functions of these sounds are not yet understood. When feeding the sloth bear makes loud sounds that can be heard over many miles.

Sloth Bears are active mostly at dusk and dawn. This bear species doesn't hibernate, but may get slow and sleepy for a short time each year (that's why they got their name.) When Sloth Bears meet humans, they can be rather aggressive and in some areas more people are injured by Sloth Bears than by tigers. Being very smart and intelligent, these bears have been used for centuries for giving performances in the streets. Sloth Bears are the original dancing animals and can even be taught to ride motorcycles in the circus.
